What changed in the 5th edition of Exploring America?

In honor of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we are releasing the 5th edition of Exploring America in 2026. This is a major update with a new layout and new content.

Part 1 Table of Contents

Part 2 Table of Contents

American Voices Table of Contents

In order to keep the curriculum at 150 lessons, we modified several units in the middle of the curriculum. We reduced the coverage of the time period from the Civil War to World War I from 9 units to 7 units.

The final two units now provide more coverage of 21st century events, including the War on Terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, technological changes, and the presidencies of Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

We used many new illustrations and photographs throughout the curriculum and returned to a one-column format to improve readability.

We dropped one literature title--Humorous Stories and Sketches by Mark Twain--and added two Twain stories to American Voices. We also dropped a few American Voices selections and added others.

We added a new literature title: Thunder Dog. In this book, Michael Hingson tells his story of surviving the September 11th attacks with the help of his guide dog, Roselle.

The 4th edition from 2019 is available for purchase while supplies last.
